Root Chakra
The root chakra, known as Muladhara chakra, is the first of the seven main chakras and is associated with stability, safety, and basic survival needs.

- Location: Base of the spine (tailbone area)
- Color: Red
- Element: Earth
- Meaning: “Root support” (from Sanskrit Muladhara)
The root chakra is your foundation. It influences how safe, secure, and grounded you feel in the world.
It’s connected to:
- Basic survival (food, shelter, safety)
- Physical stability and grounding
- Sense of belonging
- Financial and environmental security
When it’s balanced
You may feel:
- Safe and secure
- Grounded and present
- Physically stable
- Calm and steady
When it’s out of balance
A blocked or underactive root energy centre will show itself as:
- Anxiety or fear
- Feeling unstable or “ungrounded”
- Insecurity (financial or emotional)
An overactive root chakra may show itself as:
- Over focus on material security
- Resistance to change
- Hoarding or control around safety
Practices associated with the Root Chakra
People who work with the root chakra often focus on:
- Grounding activities (walking in nature, being physically active)
- Building routines and structure
- Focusing on physical needs (rest, food, environment)
- Meditation with attention on the lower body
Links to the Physical Body
A balanced root chakra aids in balancing the ovaries and the testicles. It also is linked to the excretory system, the lower digestive system, and sexual function. Problems in anyof these areas often times show an unbalanced root chakra, which suggests an emotional block around feeling safe and secure, sometimes caused by fear of a lack of resources, such as going hungry, or not having enough money. There is also a link to a fear of suffering ,for example not feeling safe as a child may cause similar feelings as an adult when for example, one loses a job.
Enhancing Self Awareness enables us to sense when the body is signalling that a story we are telling ourselves needs to be changed from within. Understanding our thoughts, emotions and physical body, as well as our patterns and habits, enables us to see where we are stuck and make changes which then enhance our physical health.
So, with the root chakra, understanding that we are safe, right here right now, will affect our excretory and lower digestive system, as well as our sexual function, in a good way. On the other side, understanding when we are not safe, and making changes to that, will also benefit our physical and our emotional health.
