🌿 Simple Exercises to Become Aware of our Thoughts
Becoming aware of our thoughts is not about stopping them or controlling them. It’s about gently learning to notice what is happening in our mind.
Most of the time, thoughts run automatically in the background. With a little practice, we can step back and observe them and this can be deeply freeing.
Below are some simple exercises to help us become more aware.
🧭 1. The Noticing Practice
Take a few minutes to just sit quietly.
Let your mind think whatever it wants. You are not trying to change anything.
Each time you notice a thought, simply say to yourself:
“thinking” or “there’s a thought”
Then let it pass.
That’s it. This small shift helps us move from being lost in thought
to becoming aware that we are thinking.
🌬️ 2. Coming Back to the Breath
Bring your attention to your breathing. Feel the air moving in and out of your body.
Soon, your mind will wander. This is completely natural. When it does, gently bring your attention back to the breath.
As you do that, notice:
- What kind of thought pulled you away?
- Was it a memory, a plan, a worry?
This exercise helps us see how thoughts arise and capture our attention.
🪶 3. Gently Label Thoughts
When a thought appears, you can lightly label it.
For example:
- “planning”
- “worrying”
- “remembering”
- “judging”
There’s no need to analyse or go deeper.
Just naming the type of thought creates a little space between you and what is happening in your mind.
🐾 4. Awareness in Daily Life
You don’t need to be sitting still to notice your thoughts.
Try this during everyday moments:
- Walking
- Driving
- Showering
- Waiting
Pause and ask yourself:
“What is my mind doing right now?”
You may be surprised how quickly thoughts appear and change.
🌊 5. The Stream of Thoughts
Imagine your thoughts as leaves floating on a stream. Each thought appears, drifts by, and disappears.
You are not in the water. You are sitting on the bank, watching.
This can help you feel that thoughts are temporary , that they come and go on their own.
🔄 6. Noticing Repeating Thoughts
Sometimes the same thoughts come back again and again. When you notice this, gently pause and ask:
- “Have I thought this before?”
- “Is this helping me right now?”
This is not about stopping the thought, but about becoming aware of patterns.
🌱 A Gentle Reminder
There is nothing you need to achieve here. Even a few seconds of noticing your thoughts is already a step toward greater awareness.
Be patient with yourself.
Awareness grows naturally, the more often you take the time to simply notice.
The goal is not to stop thinking,
but to realise that we are not our thoughts.
