The throat chakra, known as Vishuddha chakra, is the fifth of the seven main chakras and is all about communication, self-expression, and truth.

  • Location: Throat area (neck and voice box)
  • Color: Blue
  • Element: Air
  • Main theme: Speaking and living your truth

This chakra is essentially your voice, both literally and metaphorically. It governs how you express ideas, emotions, and authenticity.

The throat chakra is linked to:

  • Verbal communication (speaking clearly)
  • Listening and understanding others
  • Creativity (especially writing, singing, storytelling)
  • Honesty and authenticity

You will typically feel:

  • Comfortable expressing your thoughts
  • Able to speak honestly without fear
  • A good listener as well as speaker
  • Clear and confident in communication

A blocked or underactive throat chakra will show itself as:

  • Shyness or fear of speaking
  • Difficulty with expressing feelings
  • Holding back your true opinions

An overactive throat chakra may show itself as:

    • Talking excessively
    • Interrupting others
    • Speaking without thinking

People who work with the throat chakra are often focussing on:

    • Speaking honestly (even in small ways)
    • Journaling or writing
    • Singing or chanting
    • Mindful listening
    • Meditation focused on the throat area

A balanced throat chakra aids in balancing the thyroid gland. It also is linked to the respiratory system. Problems in either of these areas often times show an unbalanced throat chakra, which suggests an emotional block around speaking the truth, sometimes caused by deception, either having been deceived in ones life, or deceiving ones self. There is also a link to a fear of disenfranchisement, for example not having the right to vote, or not having the right to an education, etc.

Enhancing Self Awareness enables us to sense when the body is signalling that a story we are telling ourselves needs to be changed from within. Understanding our thoughts, emotions and physical body, as well as our patterns and habits, enables us to see where we are stuck and make changes which then enhance our physical health.
