🌿 Simple Exercises to Become Aware of Your Body
Becoming aware of our body is not about changing it or forcing it to relax. It’s about gently learning to feel what is happening inside our body, moment by moment.
Much of the time, we live in our thoughts and overlook the body completely. With a little attention, we can begin to reconnect and this can bring a sense of grounding and presence.
Below are some simple exercises to help us become more aware of our body.
🌬️ 1. The Simple Body Check-In
Pause for a moment during your day.
Bring your attention into your body and ask yourself softly:
“What am I feeling in my body right now?”
Notice what is happening without trying to change anything.
You might feel:
- Warmth or coolness
- Tension or tightness
- Heaviness or lightness
- Tingling or numbness
- Un-eveness between different sides of the body
There is no right or wrong sensation.
🧭 2. Scanning the Body
Sit or lie down comfortably.
Now, slowly move your attention through your body, step by step:
- Feet
- Legs
- Hips
- Back
- Stomach
- Chest
- Shoulders
- Arms
- Face
- Head
At each area, simply notice what is there.
There is no need to relax anything, just observe and feel.
🪶 3. Noticing Contact and Support
Bring attention to where your body touches something:
- Feet on the ground
- Back against a chair
- Hands resting on your lap
Feel the support beneath you. Let yourself notice that your body is being held.
This can create a quiet sense of stability.
🌊 4. Breathing in the Body
Bring awareness to your breath.
Notice how your body moves as you breathe:
- The rise and fall of your chest
- The expansion of your belly
- The air passing through your nose
You are not controlling the breath, just feeling how the body breathes on its own.
🐾 5. Awareness in Movement
Try bringing body awareness into simple movements:
- Walking
- Stretching
- Reaching
- Turning
As you move, notice:
- The shifting of weight
- Muscles engaging and releasing
- The rhythm of movement
This helps reconnect awareness with everyday actions.
🔄 6. Noticing Areas of Tension
From time to time, pause and ask:
“Where am I holding tension right now?”
Common places include:
- Jaw
- Shoulders
- Neck
- Stomach
Once you notice it, you don’t need to force it to relax. Often, simple awareness begins to soften it naturally.
🌱 A Gentle Reminder
There is nothing you need to achieve.
Even a few seconds of feeling your body is already a step toward deeper awareness.
Be patient with yourself.
The body is always here in the present, quietly waiting to be noticed.
The goal is not to control the body but to reconnect with the experience of being in it.
