🌿 Simple Exercises to Become Aware of Your Patterns & Habits
Becoming aware of our patterns and habits is not about fixing our-self or forcing change.
It’s about gently learning to see the recurring ways we think, feel, and act.
Much of what we do is automatic. We repeat the same reactions, thoughts, and behaviours without noticing.
With awareness, these patterns begin to reveal themselves and this opens the door to real understanding and change.
Below are some simple exercises to help you become more aware of patterns and behaviours in your life.
🔁 1. The “What Just Happened?” Pause
After a situation or reaction, take a moment to reflect.
Ask yourself:
- “What just happened?”
- “How did I respond?”
- “What did I feel?”
Keep it simple and factual.
This helps you step out of automatic behaviour and begin to see your patterns more clearly.
🧭 2. Noticing Triggers
During your day, gently notice what seems to trigger reactions. It could be:
- A comment from someone
- A certain situation
- Feeling rushed or tired
- Being ignored or interrupted
When something activates you, pause and ask:
“What just triggered me?”
You are not judging, just observing.
🪶 3. Spotting Repeating Reactions
Over time, you may notice similar reactions happening again and again, for example:
- Getting irritated in the same situations
- Avoiding certain tasks
- Feeling anxious before specific events
When this happens, gently ask:
- “Does this feel familiar?”
- “Have I reacted like this before?”
This reveals patterns that often go unnoticed.
✍️ 4. The Pattern Journal
At the end of the day, write down one moment that stood out.
Keep it short:
- What happened
- How you reacted
- What you felt
Over time, you may begin to see connections and repetitions.
No analysis needed, just noticing.
🌊 5. Pause Before the Habit
When you notice yourself about to do something habitual, pause briefly. This could be:
- Checking your phone
- Reacting emotionally
- Avoiding something
- Speaking automatically
- Distracting yourself with activity
Ask yourself:
“What am I about to do?”
Even a small pause brings awareness into the habit loop.
🐾 6. Awareness in Relationships
Patterns often show up clearly with other people.
Notice during interactions:
- Do you tend to interrupt, withdraw, or people-please?
- Do certain people bring out certain reactions?
Gently ask:
“How am I showing up right now?”
This can reveal deeper relational patterns.
🔄 7. Seeing the Loop
Sometimes patterns follow a loop:
Trigger → Thought → Emotion → Reaction
When you notice a pattern, try to see the full cycle:
- What started it?
- What thoughts appeared?
- What did you feel?
- Where did you feel it in your body?
- How did you act?
You don’t need to change anything, just seeing the loop is powerful.
🌱 A Gentle Reminder
There is nothing wrong with having patterns. They are part of being human.
Awareness is not about judging or fixing. It is about seeing clearly and often, when something is clearly seen, it begins to change naturally.
The goal is not to control your habits but to become aware of the patterns that shape your experience.
