🌿 Simple Exercises to Become Aware of the Observing Self (Meta-Awareness)

Becoming aware of the observing self is not about becoming distant or detached in a cold way.
It’s about gently discovering that we can notice our experience, rather than be completely inside it.

Most of the time, we are identified with our thoughts, emotions, and reactions.
Meta-awareness is the ability to step back and see these as experiences while recognising that we are the one who is aware of them.

Below are some simple exercises to help you start to become more observing of yourself.

Pause during a moment in your day. Whatever is happening, whether that be thinking, feeling, or reacting, gently say to yourself:

“This is happening… and I am noticing it.”

For example:

  • “Thinking is happening… and I am noticing it.”
  • “Frustration is here… and I am noticing it.”

This creates a small but powerful shift from being inside the experience to observing it.

Imagine you are watching yourself from a short distance away like observing yourself in a film.

Notice:

  • What you are doing
  • How you are speaking
  • Your body language
  • Your emotional tone

Ask yourself:

“What do I see?”

This helps you step outside automatic identification and view yourself with more clarity.

Sit quietly for a few minutes and let your thoughts come and go naturally.

Instead of following them, notice:

“A thought is appearing… now it’s passing.”

You don’t need to engage or analyse, just observe the movement of thinking.

Over time, you may begin to sense that you are not the thoughts. You are the one aware of them.

In any moment, gently observe:

  • Thoughts
  • Emotions
  • Body sensations

Now ask:

“What is aware of all of this?”

Rather than answering with words, rest in the sense of being the observer.

This points toward a deeper level of awareness.

During everyday situations, notice when you are fully caught up in something, for example:

  • In a strong emotion
  • In a fast reaction
  • In a stressful moment

Gently pause and ask:

“Can I notice myself right now?”

Even a brief moment of awareness begins to create space.

When something arises, try shifting your language:

Instead of:

  • “I am angry”

Try:

  • “There is anger here”

Or:

  • “Anger is visiting me right now”

This helps you recognise that experiences are within you, but not the entirety of who you are.

Sit quietly for a moment, and let everything be as it is, such as:

  • Thoughts
  • Feelings
  • Sensations

Instead of focusing on any one thing, sense yourself as the space in which everything appears.

Nothing to do.
Nothing to change.

Just aware.

🌱 A Gentle Reminder

There is no need to force distance or detach from life. The observing self is always present. It simply becomes clearer with attention.

Even a small moment of noticing is already meta-awareness.
