🌿 Simple Exercises to Explore Consciousness & Awareness Itself
Exploring consciousness is not about finding a final answer. It’s about gently turning attention toward the awareness in which all experience appears.
We have already begun noticing thoughts, emotions, the body, and the present moment. This next step is more subtle. It is becoming curious about what is aware of all of this. It is also about understanding that consciousness is “Felt Experience”.
Scientists and philosophers have only started to try an understand consciousness, so there is nothing to figure out right now. Only something to notice.
Below are some simple exercises to help you explore awareness.
👁️ 1. Noticing That You Are Aware
Pause for a moment. Instead of focusing on what you are experiencing, ask yourself:
“Am I aware right now?”
Don’t think about it too much.
Just notice the simple fact of being aware.
This is the starting point.
🪞 2. Turning Attention Around
Usually, your attention goes outward to thoughts, objects, people.
Now gently turn it back.
Ask:
“What is it that is aware of this moment?”
You don’t need a verbal answer. Just rest in the sense of noticing awareness itself.
🌊 3. Watching Everything Appear
Sit quietly and notice:
- Thoughts appearing
- Sounds arising
- Sensations coming and going
Now gently observe:
Everything is appearing in awareness.
You are not creating these experiences they are simply showing up.
Let yourself watch this happening.
🧭 4. Is Awareness Changing?
Notice how experiences change:
- Thoughts come and go
- Emotions shift
- Sensations move
Now ask:
“Is the awareness of these things changing too?”
You may begin to sense that awareness itself remains steady while experiences change.
🐾 5. Before the Label
Look at something simple around you. Before naming it, pause, and just see.
Notice:
- Colour
- Shape
- Presence
Then notice how the mind labels it. This helps you glimpse experience before thought defines it.
🪶 6. The Gap Between Thoughts
Sit quietly and watch your thoughts. Between one thought and the next, there may be a brief gap.
Notice:
In that gap, awareness is still present.
Even without thought, you are still aware.
🔄 7. You Are Not What Appears
When something arises, whether it is a thought, emotion, or sensation, gently notice:
“This is appearing in awareness.”
Then ask:
“Am I this, or am I the one aware of it?”
No need to answer intellectually, just let the question open space.
🌱 A Gentle Reminder
This is not something to understand with the mind. It is something to experience directly. There is no need to reach a conclusion.
Even a brief glimpse of awareness itself is already meaningful.
The goal is not to define consciousness but to notice the awareness that is always already here.
