Animal Reiki and Mindfulness
Reiki means Universal Energy. Universal Energy is the connection between the feminine healing powers of earth and water, and the masculine healing wisdom of air and fire. All animals have an innate knowledge regarding self-healing. In their every day lives they are well grounded and always connected to the universal energy. So are we as humans – when we remember.
So why does an animal or human need the services of a Reiki Practitioner?
In simple terms a Reiki Practioner masters the art of channelling universal energy, enabling the movement of energy through the animals’ or humans’ body:
- Energy blockages can occur where too much energy has built up in one place in the body usually during times of physical illness.
- Medications can cause a disconnection from the self healing ability as they interrupt self-healing, providing faster fixes, but sometimes causing the animal (or human) to become ungrounded.
- Emotional trauma can block the movement of energy causing physical and behavioural imbalances. Even animals over think, or protect themselves in the event of an emotional response trigger causing anxiety or depression.
A Reiki Healer is a conduit, a balancer, a trigger for self healing.

From a physical perspective, for example, an animal may have had a bad infection. Antiobiotics would have been provided, and maybe even anti- inflammatories as well. These would have enabled the infection to be healed beautifully. But, the animal may remain listless, or not eating. This would be because in the wild their body would have self healed, or not, often bringing death (which can be seen as the ultimate healing if looked at without fear). This is the natural order of things. The medications would have interrupted that, in a good way, but the animal doesn’t know that. This is when Reiki can rebalance the body, moving stuck energy, re-grounding, relaxing. It tells the energy in the body that it is no longer needed in the area it went to, to heal. After rebalancing the energy in the body, the energy goes back to day to day needs, eating, cooling, warming, organ management, musculature management, etc.
When their is emotional baggage or trauma in an animals history, this can create areas of reaction. Classic ones are the animal that becomes anxious when left alone, becomes over protective of its human(s), or doesn’t want to be touched. Unfortunately their are many many more. Reiki can help in these situations by providing a calming and relaxing energy – moving energy build ups in the mind – and over time helping the animal to self regulate its emotions, through feeling safe and loved. The best way that Reiki can work in these situations is also if the human engages in the treatments by learning to self regulate their own emotions around the situation too. For example, if an animal does not want to be touched, respecting the “No” at all times, will create a “Yes – please give me a cuddle” eventually. An animal does not respond well to desensitisation, whatever anybody else tells you. This just buries the problem and one day the animal may just say “No” very aggressively. For trauma a combination of Reiki and Mindfulness between animal and human is the key to a beautiful and relaxed relationship and quaility of life for all parties.
Finally, a combination of Reiki and Mindfulness creates a peaceful and relaxing end of life. We all die. We would all like to die peacefully. Emotions are important at these times. Acknowledging how both you and the animal feel throughout the aging process (which can be months or years when physical problems such as arthritis are involved) and the dying process, is important and honest. All parties appreciate this. Reiki provides a calming and balanced energy. Mindfulness enables acknowledgement of emotions, understanding of how those emotions are shared, and a way of being completely present and authentic through each step of creating the best life, and death, for your animal.
As a Reiki Practioner (Level 2) and qualified in Mindfulness for People and their Animals, I have found the combination to have an amazing effect on many types of issues in our domesticated environments.
For those of you of a certain age who remember these things…Reiki reminds me of the ‘defragmentation’ program that we would do on computers to reorganize the data on the hard drive, placing related pieces of data in contiguous blocks, the process of which improves file access speed and overall system performance by reducing the physical movement required for the hard drive to read files.
So in those terms, Reiki Healing helps the animal or human reorganise the energy in their body to improve speed of understanding of where to self-heal, and improve overall function, by reducing unnecessary energy usage.
